The next WFPK Winter Wednesday is January 30th! This free series takes place once a month and runs through February at the Clifton Center.

7:30pm – Joan Shelley and June Brides

Doors open at 6:30pm. WFPK members will receive preferred seating.  More info is available for directions and everything else you need to enjoy WFPK Winter Wednesday.

Matt Costa (approx. 8:30pm)
Matt Costa currently resides in Costa Mesa, CA. Matt learned to play guitar and write songs whilst recovering from a skateboarding accident. Prior to the accident Matt had hopes of becoming a professional skateboarder but it was not meant to be, his love of music and songwriting took precedence and he began to record. With the help of Tom Dumont (No Doubt), Matt recorded two self-released EP’s. In 2005 Matt joined the Brushfire family and has since released three LP’s Songs We Sing & Unfamiliar Faces (both produced by Tom Dumont) and Mobile Chateau which saw Matt take over the recording, engineering and producing duties for the first time. Matt’s mix of pop, folk, blues and psychedelia appeals to a wide range of listeners and has allowed him to tour with everyone from Jack Johnson to Modest Mouse and Oasis. Matt and band join us to celebrate his latest EP, “Sacred Hills” and an upcoming full length in February!

Joan Shelley (approx. 7:30pm)
Joan Shelley’s dry, austere tone grabbed me in the very first moments of “Ginko,” the lead cut and title track from the Louisville singer’s new album on Ol Kentuck—one of the best I’ve heard this year. Shelley’s beautiful voice sounds like it belongs to a lost talent from the folk revival of the early 60s, when plenty of urbane young women explored the country’s vanishing rural music—but she’s hardly trying to recapture some mythical past, since aside from fiddle and banjo her band essentially uses rock instrumentation, right down to the electric bass and drum kit. The ballad “Siren” is heartbreakingly gorgeous, and unlike so many women singing similar material, Shelley doesn’t weigh down her lines with florid ornamentation—she shapes her melodies with precision and clarity. She sings with striking intimacy, as though addressing someone sitting just a few feet away, but she can also really project—and when the band builds up a head of steam, she lets loose without losing control. —Peter Margasak of theChicagoReader
