A Louisville native, Mark Bacon returned to Louisville from Louisiana, shortly after hurricanes “KatRita,” to take a position at WFPK as host of Afternoon Jazz heard Sundays from 1-4 PM. Mark is also host of Adult Alternative Music on WFPK from Noon to 3PM weekdays and Saturdays from 8AM to Noon.
At Lafayette’s Public Radio outlet KRVS, he hosted four distinctly different programs, reflecting his eclectic love of many music genres. The shows were “Jazz After Dark,” which swung the full range of the jazz spectrum from Classic to Contemporary; “Pan American Rhythms,” which focused on the musics of Latin America, from all recorded sources; “Intersections,” which explored the progeny of blues, jazz, gospel, soul, rock & roll, and more; and “Insomnia,” a freeform programming which broke new artists in the Indie/underground rock format.
Additionally, Bacon has worked as a music curator, selecting and booking artists for the National Museum of American History, Festival International de Louisiane and Jambalaya!, a music festival held in Brazil.
Bacon’s love of music can be traced to his youth; he is the son of a music educator. And, as he quickly points out, “a graduate of the College of Musical Knowledge, University of my Record Collection.”
- Thing you probably didn’t know about him: He worked as a publication designer for the National Geographic Society for more than a decade. And he’s a rabid U of L hoops freak.
