Radio for Laura Shine started as a hobby with a one hour show on Sundays called Womanwaves that made its debut in 1992 on our sister station 89.3FM WFPL. At the time, she was in a popular local band called Yer Girlfriend, an English major at U of L, and waiting tables at the Bristol Bar & Grille where every Louisvillian and their uncle has worked at least once upon a time.

Womanwaves, a program that focused on music by women, was an instant hit for the station and a few years later Laura was tapped to be the morning drive-time host for the then brand new triple-A formatted station WFPK a/k/a “The New 92.” Her voice was the first introduction to the Adult Alternative format in Louisville on that snowy, dark morning January 8, 1996 at 6 a.m. when WFPK switched from Mozart to Timbuk 3 playing “The Future’s So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades.”The hobby of radio soon turned into a passion, then a career for Laura. She says she loves the “give and take, the connection with listeners that live radio offers like no other medium.”

In addition to her life-long love of music, she also spends time horse-backriding, hiking with her dogs, frequenting Louisville restaurants and mixing “killer margaritas.” Most of all, she feels very lucky to be doing what she loves for a living in her beloved hometown of Louisville, KY. After numerous Best DJ nominations and awards in Louisville and Lexington, a recent promotion to Afternoon Drive on-air and Assistant Program Director at WFPK, you can bet she is still wearing those shades and looking foward to a bright future in radio!

You know them…you love them…but you hate to admit it! You know there are songs, artists, and bands that you love but hate to admit it for whatever reasons. Maybe they were played to death on Top 40 radio and everybody is sick to death of them so it’s not “cool” to say Hey, I like “Hotel California”! or “Dancing Queen” is my all time favorite tune! So instead you laugh them off or change the station or consider these tunes bad for your soul like bologna on white bread might be bad for your belly. But when no one’s around or you’re feeling a little down, you secretly return to these songs like comfort food at Mom’s house. Sure, you feel guilt and a little shame because you’re being “uncool” but these songs make you feel good too so they can’t be all bad now can they?

Well now there is something you can do about it. Each weekday around 3:20pm on 91.9 FPK, join Laura Shine for your “Guilty Pleasure of the Day” and purge your soul of REO Speedwagon, Neil Diamond or Journey or whomever else is plaguing you. She’ll play it loud and proud for you no matter how guilt ridden she may feel about it! Email her your guilty pleasure … anonymity will be respected!
